Help Support our Project Team

November 2004

Dear Friend:

Clothes may make the man, but at Historic Cherry Hill, more than 7,500 textiles help document and tell the stories of an entire Albany household over the span of nearly 200 years. As 2004 draws to a close, we now ask for your support in our efforts to preserve this amazing collection, the completeness of which has been noted as a rarity among historic textile collections nationwide.

In the spring, we announced that the museum had received a matching grant of just over $48,000 from the Institute of Museum & Library Services (IMLS) to begin the long process of completing a detailed condition survey of about ½ of the textile collection. While IMLS funds have enabled us to work with Textile Conservators Gwen Spicer and Abby Zoldowski, and to purchase supplies and equipment critical to the project, we in turn had to match the grant with more than $50,000 in project-related staff time. Curator Erin Crissman is serving as Project Director. To date, the project team has assessed, and in many cases, vacuumed and frozen hundreds of textiles, including shawls, pillows, towels, hats, garments and furniture coverings.

Behind-the-scenes work like this is the heart and soul of a history museum's mission, but it's also quite tedious. We now ask that you support the project team by being as generous as possible in making your year-end donation. Your support will spur the team on, but more importantly, help preserve this remarkable collection and its endless stories for generations to come.

Sincerely,

Kathleen M. Quandt
